Tavistock is a market town on the River Tavy, on the western edge of Dartmoor. Much of the centre was rebuilt by the Dukes of Bedford in the 1800s, including rows of stone cottages for mine workers, and the town is part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.
Solid stone walls are the thing to understand here. They hold heat very differently from a modern cavity wall, and an EPC scores them lower, so an older Tavistock house can come out a band or two below a newer one of the same size. That doesn’t mean something’s wrong with the house. It tells you where the heat goes and what could help.
If your home is listed or in the conservation area, check with the council before acting on any recommendation that changes the outside. Wall insulation and new windows are the usual ones. Inside, things like loft insulation and heating controls are normally simpler.
